Where are you from?

What do you think the intention behind that question is? I often get that question as I LOOK Asian, but am from Norway. Today a Chinese waiter tried to speak Chinese with me. I didn't understand so I just said: "Sorry?". Then she asked me: "Where are you from?" As always I said I am from Norway. T said I should have said Korea because it was obvious the waiter wanted to know where I was from, originally. I think she wanted to know what language I was speaking, since she talked to me in Chinese, so the answer "Norway" was the right in my opinion. If I had said "Korea" she may had spoken Korean to me.... :-/
